NRA vs. the doctors

Congratulations to The Spokesman-Review and Spokane doctor Jeff O’Connor for their article (Nov. 21) and his letter (Nov. 28) describing how gun violence impacts the medical community. When the National Rifle Association picked a fight with American physicians warning them to back away from gun control advocacy and “stay in their lane,” doctors across the country replied with letters and pictures showing the effects of gun violence.

The NRA’s criticism is the pinnacle of hypocrisy. NRA board members have physically threatened Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The current NRA president was convicted of three felonies for illegally selling weapons to Iran. Oh, sure, Oliver North’s convictions were vacated on technicalities, but in 1986 a fair and impartial jury found him guilty of: (1) accepting bribes, (2) obstructing Congress, and (3) destruction of government documents.

More recently the NRA got into bed, both figuratively and, perhaps, literally, with Russian KGB operatives. To see the story about NRA’s ties to Russia just google “Torshin’s NRA Connections” or “Butina Infiltrates NRA.”

Given the NRA’s sordid past it’s surprising that the American College of Physicians didn’t tell them to “Stay under your rock!”
