The price is not the issue

Every time I read a Marc Thiessen column I feel that another side of the issue must be stated. In the opinion page published on Jan. 13 (“They were for it before they opposed it”), he argues that Democrats in the legislature were in favor of a similar bill five years ago and their opposition now is purely political.

I think we can all agree that politics and public opinion go hand in hand. Public opinion regarding the bill of five years ago was different than it is now. Now, everyone knows that the majority of Americans oppose the wall because of what it says about us and that it will be breached by people motivated to do so. Yes, as Mr. Thiessen states, the price is minuscule compared to the total annual budget. The price is not the issue. The Republicans have been in control for two years now and they haven’t done anything about this matter. Could it be they too know that the overwhelming majority of Americans don’t want it?
