Get ready for another trek to magical ‘Oz’

Few films have affected the American pop scene more than “The Wizard of Oz.” Certain phrases from the film, which was released in 1939, have become common contemporary adages. A few examples (some of which have been changed in popular usage):

“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas any more.”

“I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!”

“Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.”

“Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my!”

And, of course:

“There’s no place like home!”

Victor Fleming is officially credited as the film’s director, but several others contributed to the final cut, including George Cukor and King Vidor. And a virtual gang of screenwriters worked on the script, which was adapted from the novel by L. Frank Baum but which also had a few major differences .

Anyway, “The Wizard of Oz” is a film that just won’t go away. In fact, in celebration of its 80th anniversary, Fathom Events , in conjunction with Turner Classic Movies, is presenting special screenings of the film. It will show locally on Sunday (2 p.m.), Tuesday (7 p.m.) and next Wednesday (7 p.m.) at the Regal Cinemas’ theaters at Northtown Mall and Coeur d’Alene’s Riverstone Stadium.

Here’s your chance to skip along the Yellow Brick Road one more time. On the big screen.
