Letter divides readers

Allen Marsh wrote a letter (“America’s competing world views,” June 30) claiming competing world views between red and blue states. No one is asking Allen to become an atheist when he drives west into Washington. He thinks that everyone in a blue state is an atheist and if you are wearing a MAGA hat you are in touch with Jesus. I wish that politics were that simple. Democrats aren’t going to make Allen put on a dress and use the women’s restroom.

The zero-sum political game is what Allen and his MAGA hatters are following. They get to have guns, God and mistresses. We liberals are tagged homosexual, baby-murderers. Take any political, social and economic issue and discuss it without resorting to zero sums and perhaps we could find some agreement how to move forward.

Allen’s letter divides us against ourselves by drawing lines that cannot be moved. God can only be Jesus, but look at the Founding Fathers and you won’t find that to be true. The Constitution doesn’t allow anyone (including MAGA hatters) to force their view of morality or principles on other citizens. Frankly, Allen’s minority view is protected by the Constitution and so is our majority view. Allen: Your side only represents 40%. It took around 15% from our side to get Trump elected. Your letter didn’t convince anyone to join your minority side.
