Stand up against racism

It is hard to convince my Democratic friends that all Republicans are not racist, misogynist xenophobes when they fall in lockstep behind this president, whose forte is bullying and dehumanizing people. One wonders how many times he has to indulge in racist behavior and comments before members of his party are willing to call him out. To fail to live up to this responsibility is to encourage him to continue to act in this un-American way. The recent attack on women of color in which he tells them to go back to where they came from, is just the latest in a long list of racist behavior.

In Tuesday’s edition of the S-R our Rep Cathy McMorris Rodgers said it was “wrong” when he attacked four duly elected female members of Congress, who also are women of color. I proudly pointed this out to my Democratic friends. But then, as reported in the Wednesday S-R, she voted “no” on a House of Representatives resolution to condemn the president’s racist remarks. This, after Trump ordered them to vote against the resolution.

My Democratic friends wondered what their reaction would be if someone told Donald Trump’s third wife, Melania Trump, to go back to where she came from. Or if they told Mitch McConnell’s second wife, Elaine Chao, to go back to where she came from.
