Division endangers democracy

I am writing out of my concern for our democracy and nation. The division that exists today can be compared to a life-threatening illness. An intervention is required to mitigate the damage, pain and suffering that is taking place.

Like tumors growing out of control and threatening life, partisanship and the use of executive orders are out of control and threatening our democracy. Our nation is at, or near a crossroads. Each time lopsided, one-party partisan legislation, or an executive order is issued, a tumor grows and democracy suffers.

If our democracy fails what will replace it? Some Republicans believe Democrats want socialism. Some Democrats believe Trump is becoming an authoritarian dictator. Both sides have valid reasons for concern.

I believe the Citizens United decision, which allows big business to influence our elections and our elected officials, is much to blame. As evidence of this consider the influence the fossil fuel industry and the NRA have over elected officials. Seventy percent of us can support a change yet Congress will do nothing. Reforming our campaign finance laws would help tremendously.

A voting system allowing voters to rank all candidates in order of preference would also help. A larger field of candidates would be narrowed by assigning the votes of the lowest-ranking candidate to the voters’ second preference and so on until an ultimate winner is selected. Imagine how helpful this would be in the upcoming primaries. Please contact your elected representatives and give voice to these concerns.
