Where are you from?
For most of my 71 years, people have asked me, “Where are you from?” because, although I was born in Chicago, I have a speech impediment, and I took speech therapy in the fifth grade, so my speech is not Standard American English.
Over the years, sometimes I would get tired of this question and respond, “My mother’s womb, of course. Where the heck are you from?” In the future some may be able to say, “I’m from a test tube.” But for now, we are all from the same place.
