Save money on lawmakers
A recent letter to the editor by John Van Dalen (“Bills behind closed doors,” July 3) summarized our state’s legislative session as “… majority Democrats and governor - behind closed doors, without voters’ input, and very little transparency to the taxpayer - continue to take your money. Why do you keep voting for them?”
Another question might be: Why do we have so many legislators?
We have 63 more legislators than the state Constitution requires: 98 representatives, 63 required; 49 senators, 21 required.
Savings generated with a smaller, more efficient legislature could be put to better use in our school systems. Even with a projected budget surplus, they increased taxes.
We don’t need that many spenders in Olympia!
