The carnage of gun rights

Why couldn’t Mr. Chlewinski’s gun have been confiscated from him by police last Thursday instead of only a gross misdemeanor citation issued to him after he drew his gun and screamed threats to his neighbor? (“Feud triggered shooting that led to man’s death,” June 1).

Clearly he was hot-headed and thus a risk to society. Sadly, he was left free to return later and use his gun to mortally wound Benjamin Grosser, 29-year-old father of two young children. Why do the rights of unstable individuals with guns supersede those of society? When will we ever learn?
