Legal immigrants welcome

President Reagan once said, “… the simple truth is that we’ve lost control of our own borders, and no nation can do that and survive.”

I spent the lion’s share of my business career traveling the world. International travelers must present credentials such as a passport to enter a country. In Europe, Asia, the Far East, and even Mexico, yes Mexico, “no credentials, means no entry.” Some countries also require visas.

Many of your readers mention that we are all immigrants. True, but my ancestors, like most immigrants, entered legally. Whatever their situation, be it coming from dictatorships, socialist countries or otherwise, they entered legally. Moving to Ireland with my family in 1986, and England in 1996 required getting a work permit. In England, I had to report to the police station in my city to verify my local address.

It’s difficult to grasp the mindset of those who seem to accept people entering this country illegally, or even those progressives who promote an open border. I have no problem with people from countries south of the border, or anywhere, seeking entry, but whether a wall or other barrier, we need a way to stop illegal entry.
