Demonizing disagreement

Again, Shawn Vestal pontificates against the evils of those with whom he disagrees.

This time it’s the sheriffs taking a stand against I-1639. It seems he can barely mask his contempt for those who would challenge the state on this. Do these sheriffs have the right to take their stand on this particular issue? Shawn says, “No!” And he builds his case by painting them as little demagogues ready and waiting for any opportunity to make their own rules and force their own laws.

Really? Do we really believe these guys are that way? Could they possibly just want the state to take another look at the way I-1639 became law? Shawn says that under the Washington state Constitution this initiative is law. Another commentator, Don Brockett, also posted March 13, states that the I-1639 gun restrictions pertain to the state and federal constitutions which must be altered by amendment.

So, which is it, initiative or amendment? Wouldn’t it be better to get it right the first time? Rather than demonize or smear the character of those raising the issue, wouldn’t it be more civil to revisit how these laws may be changed to stand the test of ineffective challenge? Just saying.
