Not just their problem
The issue of homelessness in the Spokane area is not something new. However, there is a significant part of this issue that I think is being overlooked.
Most people in the area are fortunate enough to not have to deal with this struggle, but there are still members of our community that must. And the common conception is that it is their problem to deal with. I disagree. Homelessness is a problem that affects everyone, directly or inadvertently. If we are truly a community, then we need to act like it.
Homeless individuals are just like everyone else: they make mistakes and sometimes fall into unfortunate situations. When I have made a mistake or experience a rough patch, I do not have to deal with it alone. Many people facing homelessness are alone, and we expect them to figure everything out by themselves. This is an unfair expectation.
A community ought to care about all its members, not just the fortunate ones. If you see homelessness as a problem within the community, do something about it. Try to have an impact in the lives of those who truly need it. Change doesn’t occur in a vacuum.
