Catch the 35th anniversary of ‘Karate Kid’

It may not rank on the list of top quotes ever uttered in a movie, but most every film fan is familiar with the phrase “wax on, wax off.”

That’s what Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) says to Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in the 1984 film “The Karate Kid.” Actually, it’s only one of the many things that Miyagi said to Daniel, convincing the boy to do chores around his house while actually training him in the martial art.

Here are some other Miyagi sayings:

“It’s ok to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to fear”

“First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule, Daniel-san, not mine.”

“Lesson not just karate only. Lesson for whole life. Whole life have a balance. Everything be better. Understand?”

And my favorite:

“To make honey, young bee need young flower, not old prune.”

It helps to hear each of these in context, and that’s exactly what area movie fans will be able to do on Sunday at Tuesday at two Regal Cinemas theaters, Northtown Mall and Coeur d’Alene’s Riverstone Stadium. The movie will screen at 1 p.m. on Sunday and at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

It’s the 35th anniversary of John G. Avildsen’s movie. And of Miyagi’s martial-arts life wisdom.
