A better solution

After living south of Spokane for a good portion of my life, I have been always been bothered by the 195/I-90 interchange when coming to Spokane. Friday was the first time I’ve been to Spokane since the new metered on-ramp has been open and while it is a slight improvement, I still had to fight to merge with the eastbound I-90 traffic.

For years, I’ve wondered why WSDOT doesn’t just make the right lane taking exit 279 off I-90 (just west of the 195 on-ramp) an exit only and close the right lane for the very short distance between exit 279 and the 195 on-ramp. This would give a free merge lane for those entering I-90 from 195 and completely eliminate the dangers of dodging the speeding I-90 drivers at the merge point. The majority of the right-lane drivers between exit 279 and the 195 on-ramp are not slow drivers, but rather speeders trying to zip past the center lane.

The cost to implement would be negligible and the benefits would be a danger free merge.
