Moral obligation to wolves

“A question of balance” (May 12) and “Wolf’s comeback in U.S. triggers debate on protection levels” (May 17) present a valuable opportunity for dialogue and compromise.

Humans have designated and doomed wolves as ruthless killers to be exterminated.

The same description applies to human sport killers, trappers and poachers who follow wolves on the ground and by air to their last refuges to force extermination.

Wolves’ constant fight to avert human harassment should earn them our moral obligation of protection.

Two times in my life - while backpacking in Alaska and canoeing in Minnesota - I was privileged, shaken and thrilled by the thundering choir of a wolf’s howling. In my mind, the awesome experience only compares with my first attendance to a Bach’s Trumpet Gala Concert in the cathedral.
