Teacher layoffs are an outrage

I had dinner last night with a young lady who just completed her B.A. and her teaching certification in Spokane. Serena is the type of person I would want to teach my grandkids. She broke my heart when quoting the odds of her getting hired in the Spokane school system any time soon.

How do we justify a $36 million shortfall in funds to pay the people who want to spend eight hours a day, five days a week, molding our youth to be productive positive members of our society? Where did the taxes Washington earned on the 420 initiative go? How can we possibly justify releasing teachers and librarians? This is an outrage.

The influence teachers have on our youth is life-changing. Most of us have that one teacher who made “the” difference in our lives. We have got to somehow, some way, figure out a way to keep our educators. We pay enough taxes in Washington state to have the appropriate ratio of students to teachers.

Stand Up. This is wrong on every level!
