Friday’s openings: Monsters and magical rock

You know the summer-movie season is in full swing when:

1, a Disney film (the live-action version of “Aladdin” ) is packing theaters; and

2, three anticipated films of different genres are scheduled to open next.

Those three latter films, all of which open wide on Friday, are:

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” : The latest version of the classic Japanese monster movie . Oooooooh, kids, CGI!

“Ma” : Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer plays the title character, a particularly scary party host. Don’t go upstairs!

“Rocketman” : The life and career of Elton John, told in a somewhat magically realistic manner. Don’t do drugs!

No word from the Magic Lantern as of yet, so that’s all for the moment. As usual, I’ll update when the area theaters finalize their listings.
