Going with the men
Championing my fellow sisters in the workplace is without question a cherished goal. Helping women I know and admire ascend to leadership positions is one way I might make a difference. As a Bryn Mawr grad, I wouldn’t be able to hold my head up high if I didn’t.
And yet. There are times when the choices transcend gender and gender politics. Here in Spokane, we are experiencing an exciting new chapter of growth and cultural diversity. And we are facing some major political races that will define where we go next. While (Nadine) Woodward and (Cindy) Wendle may share my chosen and given gender, they absolutely, positively, do NOT represent me. Not my values, not my dreams, and not my vision for a city I love.
Who says we don’t have women in the upper echelons? Are the editors forgetting the dedicated women who comprise two-thirds of the current city council, two of whom are up for re-election and deserve our votes and mention? Karen Stratton, Lori Kinnear, Candace Mumm and Kate Burke aren’t exactly chopped liver; they’re smart, engaged and responsive to their constituents.
Further, many of our city’s woes have thrived under the last 8 years of Mayor Condon himself. He has executed many of the policies that have hurt our people and our city — including the ones often cited in this campaign, such as homelessness and public safety.
I’m going with the men this go-round. YES to Stuckart and Beggs. It’s not about gender. It’s about people.
