Rule of law or of poll?

Here we in the midst of congressional hearings on the latest criminality emanating from the Trump White House. Like previous attempts to hold Trump accountable for his lawless behavior, talking heads in mainstream media and Trump’s propaganda factories evaluate the legitimacy of every move in the current investigation in terms of public reaction to it.

Enough! The law is the law. It is not predicated on competing tribal polls.

The allegation is the president broke the law attempting to extort political favors from a desperate ally. That’s extortion. It’s a crime. This isn’t about checking which way the wind blows day to day. This is about saving our republic from an onslaught of corruption. It’s about not devolving into a kleptocracy.

I am tired of hearing competing narratives about how congressional investigations will play with Trump’s base or his legion of detractors. That’s irrelevant.

We are at a terribly serious decision point in our democratic experiment. This is about protecting the rule of law, even with an instrument as imperfect as our Congress. It’s not about ginning up the loudest mob.

Respect the right of Congress to do the investigation. Let the chips fall where they may. Keep our republic.
