Loyalty to what?

I’ve been researching the words to the Oath of Office as prescribed for the Senate and the House of Representatives, because I want to know exactly to whom and to what they are required to be loyal.

I found this: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Interesting.

Nothing in there about loyalty to an individual or party – rather it’s all about the Constitution. It’s not politics. It’s about doing the right thing, come what may. They are supposed to be warriors protecting us from anyone who is (and here comes that word) an enemy of that Great and Noble Document. I wonder just how many have conveniently forgotten that and have, therefore, broken their allegiance and are being disloyal to We The People.
