I-976 face-value v. reality

The Spokesman-Review article reviewing I-976 reminded me of one of our fall traditions: another Tim Eyman initiative.

Since 2000 there have been 22 initiatives launched under his stewardship. Several have qualified for the ballot. Some have passed. Most of these were invalidated via court rulings.

One might view this cascade of initiatives as the earnest efforts of a devoted consumer advocate. In 2017 the state attorney general sued Mr. Eyman for $2.1 million, accusing him of enriching himself with funds donated to initiative campaigns. This legal battle continues.

At face value, $30 car tabs would be great. Fewer road craters would be great too. Potholes in Spokane are a dime a dozen, but they’re a bit more expensive to fix. Environmental awareness suggests more funding support for public transportation options like bike lanes and buses. No on I-976.
