False fear of sprawl

Again, another election cycle, another wave of misinformation. For all the Chicken Littles out there: an explosion of sprawl by the city of Spokane is not going to happen.

In 1990 the state passed the Growth Management Act. Per that act Spokane County and Spokane city created comprehensive plans to guide development within their jurisdictions. Basically, the act requires infill development before expanding into outlying areas.

The last time the county approved an expansion of the urban growth area it was tied up in the courts for three years. So the city expanding outside its boundaries just isn’t going to happen. Hence, our current state of more apartments, shortage of housing and costs prohibiting our children from affording homes.
