I can see it so clearly

Rene Holaday is part of the movement that wants a 51st state of Liberty here in our little neck of the woods. Wants it badly. In the S-R article “51st state backers heading to fairs” (August 25), she’s quoted as having said, “It’s either going to be bloodshed or Liberty state.”

The problem is those urban liberals from Western Washington. There’s just too many of those people. She reasons that a 51st state located in the Inland Northwest would have a majority of rural conservatives. She says, “We are outnumbered in every single election, so just imagine finally getting rid of their domination and finally having the upper hand.”

So I took a moment and actually imagined it. Even hummed a reworked bit of John Lennon’s “Imagine.”

“Imagine all the people

Living in Li-ber-ty”

I imagined trading the “domination” of the West Side for the domination of people who think like her and Matt Shea. I imagined people who are willing to use “bloodshed” to gain “the upper hand,” and what they would do with it when they got it.

And you can’t imagine how badly it scared me.
