Citizens best qualified to set policy

In response to the letter to the editor on September 1 by Carl Greenberg (“Unqualified candidates”), I offer that citizens are the best qualified to set policy, prepare budgets, and do long-range planning for cities, school districts and other public organizations that are closest to the citizens. Political experience is not only not required, it is not desirable.

It is best that business people, tradespeople, professionals, (maybe even a lawyer), and productive people be elected to city councils and other forms of local governments. We do not want a bunch of career bureaucrats that are more interested in bull hooks at the circus, suing the opioid manufacturers and the railroads rather than making our city a safe place to build a business and raise our families.

The current City Council is dysfunctional and needs to be replaced with working citizens who recognize real problems and are willing to set policy that resolves these problems. Nadine Woodward and Cindy Wendle are good choices for a fresh start in Spokane.
