Solutions are needed
The current crisis dictates we cast budget worries aside to save our economy, help the millions of people suffering, and prevent social unrest. Although I am concerned with our mounting national debt, when the house is on fire, we cannot worry about the water bill.
The best type of risk management and financial planning is proactive and long-term, hopefully never to be used. This is how responsible citizens conduct themselves. Not so with the federal government.
The lack of planning and preparation regarding the coronavirus is abundantly clear. Neither the administration nor Congress has demonstrated competence during this emergency or shown enough understanding and compassion for those in dire need. These things do not inspire confidence.
The steady increases in national debt has gone on for twenty years, with no plan to address it, and largely radio silence from both political corners. We used to pay down the debt during a strong economy in order to afford massive spending during a disaster. No longer. This path does not bode well for future generations.
What is needed is not to drain the swamp, nor a revolution, the real problem is a significant lack of leadership. We need action, now; and some serious soul-searching after this crisis is behind us.
