Spokane: subscribe!

Even before Rob Curley’s column of March 24, I had been thinking of writing, and his words about subscribing jogged me into doing so.

Our community owes the Spokesman-Review a huge debt of gratitude for the timely, relevant and accurate coverage of our current crisis. A steady stream of helpful articles has provided the latest information needed for us to cope with its many aspects. Thank you from the heart to all S-R staff members for your dedication, from the editor, to reporters, to production staff, to delivery people.

Spokanites: if you don’t already subscribe, please do if you can manage it. It’s one of the best bargains going and if we don’t support our hometown newspaper, it will shrink and perhaps worse. I know because I was a resident of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. The Times-Picayune provided a heroic level of service to the community; I firmly believe that without it, New Orleans would not have come back. But shortly thereafter the publisher made severe cutbacks and many of those hard-working and talented staff and reporters lost their jobs. A somewhat brighter ending came when the publisher of the Baton Rouge Advocate realized that this presented an opportunity and opened a New Orleans edition.

Please, if you value the information and the sense of community that only a hometown newspaper provides, and that the Spokesman is doing such a good job at, subscribe.
