Magic Lantern to screen demons and booklovers
So, what will the Magic Lantern be streaming on Friday? Two films, one of which played for a week at the actual theater before everything got shut down because of COVD-19.
The two new online screenings are:
“The Booksellers” : This documentary is an intimate look at the workings of the New York book scene.
Says Christian Science Monitor film critic Peter Rainier, ” ‘The Booksellers’ is a documentary for people who treasure the sheer look and feel of books. It is for anyone who has ever spent way too much time in used and rare bookstores teetering on tall ladders or squeezing through narrow, tome-filled aisles in search of that most precious of commodities: the book you didn’t know you needed until you found it – or, to be more precise, it found you.”
“Extra Ordinary” : Irish comic Maeve Higgins plays a driving instructor/paranormal investigator who is asked by a father to help exorcise a demon from the body of his daughter.
In my own March 13 review of the film, I wrote this: “What happens … involves satanic rituals, a ghostly ex-wife, demonic possession, a manic bird, a budding romance and, despite such an offbeat blend of detail, an ongoing sense of low-key comedy — much of it due to Higgins’ understated comic delivery.”
Pleasant viewing.
