Virus’s name isn’t racist
Columnist Leonard Pitts continues his tireless effort to uncover a racist White American beneath every stone. The difference in his recent column (“To Asian Americans: It’s bigots’ problem,” April 13) is now white people are attacking Asians as well as Blacks.
In the interest of full disclosure I will note that I dislike the Chinese government … intensely, and for many reasons; including its subterfuge regarding COVID-19. This does not mean I dislike the Chinese people, other Asians, and certainly not Americans of Asian ancestry. Nor do I condone physical attacks upon Asians, here or anywhere else in the world.
But I draw the line at yelling “racist!” at anyone who calls the COVID-19 virus the Chinese Virus. We have long tagged diseases by their geographical location, and early on many liberals in the media — including Bill Maher, Don Lemon and a dozen or more CNN reporters — all called it the Wuhan or Chinese virus. It was when President Trump used the term “Chinese Virus” that liberals began to foam at the mouth.
It is a sign of how jaded and weary the liberal mantra has become that the best they have to offer is never-ending criticism of President Trump, along with endless racist accusations. Sad!
