Be patient, fishers

I’m writing to offer another perspective on the hunting and fishing ban currently imposed by Washington state. Obviously the ban has people frustrated.

I consider myself a citizen of the state. Born and raised in Spokane, I’ve been fortunate to have lived in both Eastern (45 years) and Western Washington (25 years). We raised a large family and five of our children currently live near the Puget Sound. Our family grew up fishing and hunting eastern Washington and my wife and I regularly visit our children in Western Washington. I suspect we are not alone.

As a citizen of the state, I recognize the importance of hunting and fishing to citizens regardless of their address. Fly fishermen from Western Washington escape to Rocky Ford every January in search of trophy trout. Every spring and fall, Western Washington hunters bless the economy of Eastern Washington in pursuit of turkey. Easterners love visiting Western Washington beaches and family.

As we travel across the state, stock up on grocery supplies, stop at gas stations and frequent restrooms, we unknowingly could be spreading the COVID-19 virus. As baby boomers we’ve become a bit spoiled. Be patient, stay home and save lives.
