Thoughtful hand-washing

The local television news programs are running short ads showing a person washing his/her hands for 20 seconds as we are encouraged to do to help prevent illness from the coronavirus. No doubt these short ads do a lot to help us remember how important hand-washing is.

But there is one thing that bothers me each time I see one of these ads, and that is all the clean water that runs down the drain unused. If the ads would show the person turning the faucet on, wetting hands, turning faucet off, lathering and washing for 20 seconds, then turning the faucet on and rinsing — the ad could so easily encourage both washing hands and conserving water.. Both are very important.

Our aquifers are being depleted at an alarming rate, and we all need to do our best to not waste water.
