The way we treat animals
This particular letter centers on the glorification and abuse of other animals. In this zone I can think of no greater abuse than the slaughter, barbecuing, and bragging about it, especially on television newscasts.
For this reason, television-wise, I have to change channels to a PBS station because when I hear a local newsperson actually bragging about barbecuing another animal I become sickened.
Of course criticisms should be constructive and present alternatives.
Part B: When humans learned to grow their own food it became a major advance because it then became unnecessary to remain in a hunter-gatherer mindset.
It is easy to recognize that many foods can be eaten and since our so-called taste buds seem ultra important there are ways of constructing foods that taste kind of like animals but are not.
I wonder if it would be possible for many of us to show respect and compassion for other animals. As an example, a cow is a peaceful, gentle animal with no desire to injure anyone.
Could we treat other animals as we wish to be treated? I don’t think it’s beyond our comprehension.
