What about the House?
It was no surprise that the many people interviewed regarding the Trump impeachment proceedings had varied opinions (“A Spokane divided,” Jan. 25). What was surprising was that not one mentioned the unprecedented way the House conducted the impeachment hearings.
When Speaker Pelosi called for the impeachment there were noticeable differences between how it was handled compared to past impeachments. First, only members of three committees were allowed to attend, rather than the entire House. Second, Republicans were not allowed to call any witnesses to testify. Third, Adam Schiff would not allow Republicans to cross-examine witnesses, and he halted lines of questioning he thought would be unfavorable to the impeachment.
House Democrats also leaked bits of testimony taken out of context to further reinforce their arguments. The media, including this paper (to the best of my recollection) did not mention one word about these unfair and totally unprecedented tactics, so it’s no surprise none of those interviewed were aware of this travesty.
Several of those interviewed were concerned that the Senate would be unfair in handling the impeachment. What would they have to say about how the House handled it? If you want objective news coverage you must search for it.
