While we slept
On Thursday, Feb. 6th — after midnight — the prolonged sound of a motor vehicle attracted my attention. Looking to see what it might be, I observed city employees filling potholes. I watched for over 20 minutes as one man lifted, tapped down, and spread, shovelful after shovelful of mix from a truck into a large hole. After a few minutes, a second person emerged from the truck to join him doing the same thing. They were still working at it when I quit watching at 12:30 A.M. It was a cold, drippy night - on north Wall St. in Spokane.
In the daylight on Friday I looked to see their finished product. As cars sped by over the repaired street, I wondered if anyone even noticed? No nameplates on office doors or desks for these workers; no names making news headlines; no special recognition - just ordinary folks doing their jobs, providing a public service of benefit to us all.
While we all slept. Thank you.
