Core 24 is unfair

The Core 24 is unfair to some students. The Core 24 is Washington state’s graduation requirement system. In this system, it will become way harder for academically challenged kids to graduate. If someone in high school just failed one class, it would almost be impossible to graduate.

I understand that most colleges are requiring these courses, and it’s important for kids to take them. But if a kid knows he is not going to college, then they should have the option of a high school education plan that does not require as many credits. For a college-bound student, the Core 24 will work fine. This system favors the kids who are going to college, not the kids that are not.

I believe that the drop-out rates will go way up in high schools with the Core 24 in place. If a kid just slips up in one time in a class, that could impact his/her life forever. In the old graduation requirements, you could fail a class and have the opportunity to retake again with no real penalty on that person’s way to graduation. This is why high schools should offer a less rigorous graduation plan.
