Something to celebrate?

A front-page article in the Spokesman-Review a day after President Trump’s Feb. 4 State of the Union speech quotes Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers praising Trump’s speech with his bragging about how good he has made our economy. CMR says, “The economic numbers are off the charts,” and “it’s something we should all celebrate!”

Really? Well, it’s easy to live high on the hog on borrowed money until you can no longer afford to make the ever-increasing loan payments, and that’s exactly where (doesn’t include all Republicans, but) Trump and “his Republicans” tax cut have us heading.

These tax cuts have taken us to new significantly higher levels in deficit spending. The national debt is reported to stand now at about 23 trillion dollars and is projected to increase at one trillion dollars or more each year. For sure those numbers are “off the charts.” The tax cuts have given the super-rich and big corporations huge amounts of money, and for us common folks, a little more spending money, all of which has over-stimulated the economy for the short term.

Trump and “his Republicans” short-term thinking of working to win elections with tax cuts and then having “our government” borrow money certainly isn’t much to “celebrate,” especially for our children and grandchildren who will inherit all this debt.
