WEA bullying
Your article of Jan. 9, Flyers urge teachers to opt out of union, brought back memories for me. Rich Wood, spokesman for the WEA, called the flyers, “nothing but an attempt to harass and intimidate school employees.”
Let me tell you how the WEA harassed and intimidated me. I am a retired teacher from District 325 and was subject to the WEA taking money from my paycheck, without my approval, to spend on political projects! Was I asked if they could do it? No! Was I asked how I wanted it spent? No!
To get this money back, every year I had to join a class action law suit to get the political portion of WEA union dues back. It was my money. What gave the WEA the right to take that money without my consent? I guess it’s called, I’ll grease your palm and you grease mine.
Finally the U.S. Supreme Court in Janus vs. AFSCME gave public employees the freedom to opt out of paying dues to their unions.
Teachers, I would advise you to take a good look at the flyers. I would also take a good look at where your union dues are spent and ask for an accounting before you let anyone take a large amount of money from your hard-earned paycheck.
