Neutering the FEC

While the president revels in his extrajudicial killing of a terrorist Iranian general, the 2020 U.S. election remains in peril by the failure to act of the president and Mitch McConnell. Fair and legal elections remain a low priority for the GOP one month out from the first caucuses.

Buried on Page 5 of the Jan. 7 paper is a report that lawyers representing both political parties are urgently pleading for the appointment of a new member to the bipartisan Federal Election Commission, which has lacked the quorum necessary to meet since August 2019.

What does it say about the GOP that the agency charged with routing out foreign election interference, illegal funding and fraud is neutered because Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell won’t appoint a new member to re-establish a quorum and allow it to get to work?

While their president and his war hawk secretary of state drive us toward yet another endless war in the Mideast, McConnell and the GOP leadership celebrate their success using the scary recklessness of their president to quietly pursue corruption of the 2020 election and the continuation of their minority rule. This story should be Page 1 every day until it’s addressed.
