Labeling Catholics unfair
I feel an obligation to respond to the article in the June 25 Spokesman Review written by CEO and President of Catholic Charities Rob McCann where he has had a revelation that he and members of the Catholic Church are racist. I really don’t care if that’s how he wants to identify himself. What I do resent is when he puts the racist label on me and my fellow Catholics and the Catholic Church.
Point in fact, Mr. McCann, is you do not know me and have never met me yet you label me and others you have not met in the Catholic Church as racist. This label is beginning to lose all significant meaning because it is being thrown around to anyone who disagrees with your particular point of view. Instead of incurring a logical discussion, a person with a different point of view is just called a racist and it is left at that.
This label should be thrown in the trash heap along with all the recent hateful labels such as Nazi and many others through the ages. As a person who has been a regular contributor and volunteer at Catholic Charities, I’m rethinking my involvement in an organization that so unabashedly throws out such demeaning labels without regard for feelings or beliefs. I would appreciate Mr McCann giving me the label I deserve: person.
