Letters for July 14.

Faith in the young

We are all from the same place, our mother’s womb. However, once we emerge from that womb our life experiences, expectations and aspirations can be very different depending on our race, religion, gender identity and where we were born on this planet.

These sometimes hidden, sometimes blatant inequalities need to be addressed. This will not be an easy task. Just recognizing and acknowledging that inequality exists is very difficult for lots of people. However, it is essential, if we are going to effect change. I am old and have little faith in my generation. I am hopeful that the young ones will show us the way. Please, pay attention to what they say and do.

Live the golden rule

As an elderly white woman who attempts to follow the teachings of Jesus, I have come to the late understanding that, by virtue of living seven-plus decades in a dominant culture that privileges me over people of color, I am a racist.

This does not mean that I have borne ill will to or intentionally harmed those who are not white. It does mean that in my silence and failure to challenge the status quo I have contributed to systemic racism in our institutions of health, education, finance, government and yes, in our churches.

All the world’s major religions have something similar to Christianity’s golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Only as we acknowledge that we have failed to treat our brothers and sisters of color as we wish to be treated can there be hope for the transformation of this nation into one where there truly exists “liberty and justice for all.” Only in our humility, repentance and constructive, collaborative action can that hope be realized.

Lucas for senator

Recently I heard Dave Lucas speak. I was impressed with his knowledge of the issues and his compassion for people. His vision is to give voice to all people in the 3rd District, and to work for better economic policies that support jobs and reduce tax burdens.

By electing Dave to office the people in his district and across the state will have better choices for their children’s education and more money in their pockets. As a parent, a veteran and a leader, Dave is interested in his community, not some agenda. I have every confidence in Dave serving people not special interests as he believes in duty above self.

Challenging times are ahead and we need individuals like Dave in the Senate who want to serve their community, not the bureaucracy, and will give voice and options to all. Dave Lucas is the best candidate for this time.
