Racism is the air that we breathe as Americans. It has been that way ever since the first slave ship arrived over 400 years ago. It is entrenched in the policies, structures, and working assumptions of every institution in America. As a white person, I have white privilege which I benefit from every day. It doesn’t mean that life is easy for me or that I don’t face some unfair obstacles in pursuing my goals in life. I do! What I don’t have to deal with is a deep seeded prejudice that has been built into the policies, rules, and laws across this Country.

Rob McCann, CEO of Catholic Charities, has spoken boldly to his organization and to all of us. The opposite of racism is anti-racism - instead of “not a racist” according to Ibram Kendi author of “How to be an Antiracist.” McCann’s words are being picked apart by the “I am not a racist” crowd. His own church is playing their own power games to sideline him. His family has received threats.

McCann announces his goal to be anti-racist and the same for his organization. He should be supported and held accountable to his commitment. The forces of fear and evil are gusting in your face. May the Spirit of God strengthen you to take the next courageous steps. May other people of faith trying to do anti-racist work speak in covenant with you. I do so today!
