Chancery worth saving
I am writing to encourage the citizens of Spokane to help preserve the Chancery Building at 1023 W. Riverside Ave.
The over 100-year-old building is a beautiful example of architecture by one of Spokane’s most famous architects, Kirtland Cutter. The building’s elegant and symmetrical style has long since passed. The beauty of “days gone by” that have the ability to spark interest wonder and just inspire are harder and harder to find.
I can understand the difficult task of renovating older structures. But our downtown core is the heartbeat of Spokane. We have already torn down and replaced many of our beautiful structures. We all enjoy walking streets of beautiful cities and Spokane has so much to offer. The entire area of the Chancery Building has unlimited potential.
I have read that our “millennial’s” are extremely interested in preservation of historic buildings. These are the people who are renting apartments, using the restaurants and pubs, hiking, biking and spending more and more money everyday and who are quickly becoming the backbone of our economy.
I feel our community would benefit greatly from saving these types of buildings and our citizens would wholeheartedly support it financially to save it and to utilize it.
There are many ways that us citizens could and would support the endeavor. Simple ideas such as, sell and pave the sidewalks in front of structure in copper medallions with names of local supporters. The possibilities of what people can and will do is unlimited.
