Not how it works

In his letter to the editor (“A change for the better,” May 27), Daniel Peterson uses the argument that God sent the pandemic for political reasons. Yikes!

First, that assumes that God has not given us free choice and that he is some kind of manipulator. It reminds me of an incident years ago in our household with eight children, five of whom were in high school. A daughter had not studied enough and was concerned about a test she was to take. She claimed that she prayed that God would help her to pass the test. We explained that God does not work that way.

I don’t even remember whether or not she passed the test. As an adult, she has definitely figured it out. God is not some puppeteer pulling the strings!
