A way to move forward

As an attendee of the protest on Sunday, I agree with Shawn Vestal that it was an amazing experience. One that I think may be unique to Spokane. Please read his column from Monday (“Spokane ‘did itself proud’ in a big, peaceful way,” June 1) - I can’t say it better.

I wonder if Spokane could be unique in another way. Perhaps in moving forward to Step 2 instead of an endless repetition of Step 1, that is, protest after protest. I would love to see leaders of appropriate and representative arenas agree to sit down and talk about solutions that address the very real problem of the deadly combination of racism, violence, and power/authority/policing in our community. And this could be followed by Step 3 — voting on/enacting these changes, and Step 4 — tweaking changes if needed. I would also love to see this be an ongoing process, with transparency to the public.

Protests are a rallying cry of “Enough Is Enough!” But this alone will only fuel the very valid feelings of helplessness, frustration and anger without a response and action.
