Movement needs leaders
The more things change, the more they stay the same. A trite saying but apt for the present times.
What starts as revulsion toward a specific incident, which sparks outrage and protest, gradually devolves into larceny, looting, violence, and a loss of vision. A fractured society takes time to heal, and amidst a global pandemic, even longer, but the stasis will be maintained until the next unfortunate event.
Abraham Lincoln wrestled with these same dilemmas in the 1850s, and realized that different races living together would be forever an explosive issue. Sadly, the Great Emancipator’s memorial was recently vandalized, thus providing necessary proof in how far we need to progress as a nation.
Where are the Abbie Hoffmans, Tom Haydens or Todd Gitlins to lead the movement for lasting change? It can happen, only if done the right way, without the anarchy.
