A small sacrifice

I would agree with letter writer Steve Temple (6/18/20), I trust scientists and experts. In reading his letter, though, it is clear that Steve does not trust scientists and experts. He should read the articles in the Spokesman that clearly point out the need to wear masks. Someone should point out to Steve that wearing masks is not meant to protect the wearer, but other people.

This concept of making a small sacrifice in order to benefit others seems to be a moral choice that many people in our community are not willing to make. I am totally dismayed, when out shopping at a store, to see so many people so self-centered as to place their very minor discomfort ahead of the safety of others. I would suppose that these same people are the ones loudest in demanding a reopening of our economy, not realizing that their actions may lead to a return to Phase 1.

This lack of civil responsibility by many in this country has led me to believe that many Americans do not have the moral fiber to take care of the well-being of our society, but only follow their own selfish whims. Based on that, I shudder to think of the climate crisis and the necessary sacrifices that must be made to protect future generations. These same people will not make the moral decisions needed to protect their own children and grandchildren.

“American exceptionalism” will destroy the planet.
