Revisionist history

Bob Strong takes to task contemporary critics of the Founding Fathers who gained and maintained their substantial wealth through the practice of slavery (“Historical context of conquests,” Feb. 22). He accuses them of revisionist history by arguing that slavery was an accepted practice of the time.

Yet he ignores the fact that there was a strong abolitionist movement in both Britain and the colonies, and said Fathers were certainly aware of it. The eminent English author Samuel Johnson wrote: “How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of Negroes?”
