Secession fever

I enjoyed reading Shawn Vestal’s excellent and informative piece, “Insanity abounds in state secession fantasies” (Wednesday, February 19, 2020).

One of his points I thought most interesting that I hadn’t thought about was, what if one of these state secession plans actually happened? And then a group in that newly formed state wanted their own state and seceded? And then another group in that state decided they wanted to have their own state and seceded and then another unhappy group — well, you get the idea. We could end up with hundreds of newly formed states.

Each of these new states would have to form new governments, have elections, pass laws, collect taxes, etc. Can you imagine what a mess this would be? It’s crazy! Wouldn’t it be easier for people to be more flexible and use more common sense in their political views and try to get along with each other?

Besides, why would anyone want to secede from a great state like Washington, which has the honor of being named after our very first president?
