A wasteful escort

As a lifelong dog owner and lover, I intimately know the strong bond that develops between beloved pups and owners, or as in this case the strong bond between K-9 Chief, who lost an eye in service, and his handler, Officer Nick Stewart. A thank you to WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital and all others noted for their successful care and treatment of Chief.

What I question, however, is the reported 20 police car convoy from 11 law enforcement agencies escorting Chief home from Pullman to Moses Lake (“Canine convoy,” March 5). As noted in the article, “All seven Spokane police officers in the K-9 unit spent the majority of their shift Wednesday taking Chief home.” Bonding yes, but is this the best use of limited resources, not to mention the carbon footprint of all those cars?
