A brighter future
Recently, I traveled to Olympia along with over 500 early learning advocates to meet with my state lawmakers. Together we were the voice for kids.
As a parent, ECEAP teacher’s aide, and Save the Children Action Network volunteer, I know the importance of investing in high-quality early learning and care. Studies have shown that a child’s brain is almost completely developed by age 5. Therefore, it is critically important to capitalize on this short window. Unfortunately, Washington state is not capitalizing on this window, and our children are suffering for it.
Washington ranks 39th in the nation for access to preschool, with less than half of Washington’s kids ready for kindergarten. Similarly concerning is that early learning spending accounts for just 1.1% of the state budget. This is unacceptable.
I want to thank Rep. Bob McCaslin and Sen. Mike Padden for meeting with me and other early learning advocates. I also look forward to working with Bob McCaslin, who spoke at the rally for early learning, to demonstrate the importance of investing in our youngest learners.
Children are critical members of our society, and investing in their social, emotional and academic development ensures a brighter future for us all.
