Spokane service clubs
Good article on Spokane service clubs (“Spokane’s service network tries to do more with less,” March 15, 2020).
Lions Clubs deserve a shout-out, too. Spokane has several, with various different meeting times and service projects. My own club, Spokane Central Lions, has been fortunate to maintain over 100 members for several years. We meet every Tuesday for lunch and a program about good things going on in Spokane. One of our members always said she loved coming to Lions because everybody was happy and enthusiastic.
For decades, our club ran the beer garden at the Spokane Interstate Fair, recycling all the profits back into the community. Some of our major projects are opening and closing the Girl Scout camp on Lake Coeur d’Alene on land we donated to them 80 years ago, partnering with Garfield School on many of their activities, testing sight and hearing of more than 1,000 pre-schoolers each year, awarding scholarships to high school seniors, WSU nursing students, and kids attending diabetes summer camp, and of course all kinds of services for the blind, following a challenge from Helen Keller.
Thanks for featuring some of Spokane’s many service clubs. Find us on the web.
